I'm utterly ashamed to admit that this is only my second experience of the various Godzilla iterations; the first being the Hollywood variant — and I can't even begin to put to scale how little the Hollywood films compare to the terrifying presence of the ruthless, uncaring, towering, regenerating atomic destructor of Godzilla Minus One. everything about this Godzilla’s design and execution was perfect to me, and for once i really feared it through the screen.
Moreover, the film's also equally impressive in its character work; we follow Koichi on his journey through redemption and revenge, but in the process we feel the grief and terror of all the common people who stepped up to battle an impossible enemy.
And when we combine these two elements, what we get is possibly the best monster movie of the decade.
Huge, huge thanks to my friend Yonal who's been so ecstatic about the sequel that it prompted me to finally check this film out! Best believe I’ll be catching Minus Zero in theatres.
